Laser therapy (photobiomodulation) is the use of specific wavelengths of light (red and near infrared) to create therapeutic effects.
These effects include improved healing time, pain reduction, increased circulation and decreased swelling.
Laser therapy for dogs is a very safe and effective therapy with no long-term side effects.
Some patients may be slightly more stiff after their first treatment session, although this usually resolves quickly.
During each session the laser energy produced increases circulation, drawing water, oxygen and nutrients to the damaged area.
This creates an optimal healing environment that reduces inflammation, swelling, muscle spasms, stiffness and pain.
As the injured area returns to normal, function is restored, and pain is relieved.
The response to the treatment can sometimes be seen as soon as 12 hrs after treatment but the effect is cumulative and most conditions require several treatments for the greatest benefit. Most cases require up to 6 treatments, often delivered over 3 weeks. It can be used in conjunction with a multimodal approach to patient care with medication, acupuncture, physiotherapy or hydrotherapy.
Many rigorous studies have shown the benefits to a wide range of conditions - from osteo-arthritis to soft tissue injuries, from wounds to gingivitis and from neurological conditions to ear disease. However it is not a cure for all; some cases can be too extreme for laser treatment.
The treatments do not require sedation or anaesthetic and most last between just 1-4 minutes.
